72nd scale models
census of commercially available models, kits, decals,
Used with kind permission from Dirk Adel. This is a good example of what can be achieved using natural lighting and a carefully placed base board. Notice how Dirk has carefully selected a non-descript background that scales well with the model. The baseboard has been carefully positioned to merge with the background in such a way as to simulate the edge of the 'real' tarmac.
The benefits of photographing outside can be readily seen: notice how the canopy glints realistically and takes on the hue of the sky above: you could swear that was real perspex. The shadows are a correct blue hue instead of being a musty grey or black. Placing the cones in the foreground and photographing them out of focus reinforces the sense of depth by leading the eye from them to the subject, and then on to the background: the illusion is complete.
